Hermes News Editor Version 1.0
By Sam Shafritz
Original WWIV Version by Adam Caldwell
Overview:
"News" is an external designed to let Hermes SysOp's create and edit up
to ten "System News Messages." The basic concept behind News is to
force users to read important news, but spare them the constant
displaying of the message over and over again. This is achieved by
several features of this external. First, for users with ANSI, messages
are displayed in a bright attention getting ANSI style. Second, messages
may NOT be aborted with a tap of the [SPACE] bar. And finally, after a
user has read a certain new message it is recorded and he is not shown
it again.
Setting it up:
Hermes News Editor is much easier to set up than it's WWIV counterpart.
Simply quit Hermes. Place the external in your "Externals" folder. And
then relaunch Hermes.
Non-SysOp use of the program:
All users at Log-On will either be shown some new news, or be told
there is no new news.

'R' will display a list of all the Old News and prompt the user to
enter which one he wants to view.
'I' will display some information on this program. Give Adam Caldwell
the credit he deserves.
'Q' this will exit back to the BBS's external menu.
SysOp use of the program:
Those users who are marked as a SysOp can use all the commands normal
Non-SysOp user can, plus three more.

'A' will let you create a brand new System News message. The program
will just beep if you already have 10 messages and press this. First
you will be asked to select a color for this news. The color you
select will be the background color for every other line of your
message. The background of the other lines defaults to white. After
you have selected the color you will be asked to enter a title. The
title can be up to 67 characters long. You will also be able to change
this title later. After you enter a title you are ready to enter your
message.
Now enter the news, max. 20 lines.
Enter '/HELP' for help, '/ES' to save.
[---=----=----=----=----=----=---]---=----=----=----=----=----=---]
If this looks familiar, good. I tried to make the entering of the
news as close to a normal Hermes Post or E-Mail as I could. There
are several differences though.
Editor Commands:
/ES - Immediate Save
/ABT - Immediate Abort
/CLR - Clear Message and Start Over
/RL - Replace Last Line
/LI - List Message so far
/LN - List Message with Line Numbers
/TI - Change Title
/D# - Edit Line Number (i.e. /D4 edits line 4)
'E' will present you with a list of the current News Messages. Select
the one you wish to edit. You will then be placed in Edit mode. Edit
mode is EXACTLY like the way you entered the message in the first place.
Be careful with the /ABT command here, it will delete the message. After
editing a message, it is unmarked as "already read" from all users.
'D' will present you with a list of the current News Messages. Select
the one you wish to delete.
ANSI and ASCII:
Just as there are two text versions for some messages in Hermes (i.e.
ANSI Log On, Log On), News' messages may also have ANSI and ASCII
equivalents. You may have up to 20 News messages--ten ANSI messages
and ten ASCII messages. Any message you enter will be made into either
an ANSI or ASCII message depending on your current ANSI setting. That
is why the (T)oggle ANSI option was provided. If you want the same
message in both formats, you must enter it twice. Likewise, to delete
dual format messages, you must delete them in ANSI as well as ASCII
modes. The ANSI and ASCII News messages are completely separate from
one another.
Differences between Adam Caldwell's version and mine:
1] Adam Caldwell's version can have up to 800 lines, mine can have only
20. (24 if you include the title and footer)
2] Adam Caldwell's version has no formal delete command. You have to
delete the file yourself.
3] Adam Caldwell's version does not leave a space before and after the
ends of the message.
4] My version has a much more user-friendly entering and editing system.
5] Many other subtle differences.
Shareware:
If you like Hermes News Editor and would like to use it on your
Hermes BBS, you must register it for $5.00.
